11th Zagreb Design Week: Creativity Tears Down Invisible Barriers
With socially engaged topics and creative participants from around the world, the Zagreb Design Week contributes to overcoming stereotypes and invisible barriers which are still present.
The topic of this year’s 11th Zagreb Design Week is Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Design Revolution. The syntagma of glass ceiling, which is a synonym of invisible barriers which stop women but also national minorities from making progress, marks this year’s festival of design, dedicated to promoting diversity and advocating equality, creativity and cooperation in design. This largest regional gathering of designers will take place from 25 to 29 September in the newly refurbished film studios and park of the Jadran film complex.
Italy, a country famous for excellent design, is the partner country of this year’s edition of the festival. The focus of happenings in Zagreb will be female designers who are frequently overshadowed by their male colleagues. An exhibition, lectures and documentary movies screenings will be dedicated to their creative work.
At this largest regional design festival, there will also be talk about Croatian female designers, whose work is the topic of lectures and poster exhibition. The Museum of Arts and Crafts will exhibit objects made by Croatian female designers. Furniture makers from Croatia and southeastern Europe will show their designs at the Jadran film complex. Exhibits by students and pupils will show the future of design.
Moreover, there are several visiting foreign exhibitions coming to Zagreb. This event is a member of international association of design festivals entitled World Design Weeks, which is a global network of 44 festivals. The result of this cooperation is the arrival of exhibitions from Chile, Mexico and Spain to Zagreb.
On the first day of the gathering the international design award established in 2017, ZGDW Award, will be presented. Designs of finalists from the entire world will be exhibited throughout the festival.
The entrance to the Zagreb Design Week is free of charge and in addition to technical topics, visitors will get a chance to enjoy gastro offer and entertaining activities and purchase products directly from their designers.
