Vanilla half-moons
Isn't it about time that you surprised all of the neighbours who have, for years, been brining you vanilla half-moons for the holidays?
That's right – bake some yourself! It is very simple and Christmas just would not be the same without them. Plus, there will come a time when the neighbour with the half-moons will no longer be around and you might be the one that will have to take up the role of "moon-dealer".
Ingredients for 40-50 pieces:
For the dough:
150 g white smooth flour
150g hard flour
200g butter
80 g granulated sugar
100g ground walnuts
1 egg white
For sprinkling:
80 g of powdered sugar
20 g vanilla sugar
Preparation:
Sift hard and plain flour in a suitable bowl, add sugar, ground walnuts and vanilla sugar. Mix the ingredients. Then add butter cubes and mix with your fingers until you get a mixture resembling breadcrumbs. Next, add egg whites to the mixture and mix well once more. Move the dough to a floured worktop, flour it some more and knead into dough sausages, approx. 2 cm thick. Thus formed, cut the dough into 5 to 6 cm long pieces, fold them into half-moons and move to a suitable baking tray covered with baking paper. Bake for 20 minutes in an oven preheated to 220°C. When baked, roll the half-moons in a mixture of vanilla sugar and powdered sugar.
