Wow Meow etiquette

Wow Meow etiquette

Every culture has its own perspectives on certain behaviours, so it would be advisable to inquire about them in the country you are travelling to. We all want a beautiful and safe city of Zagreb, and we want others to enjoy it, too. Therefore, in order to facilitate the stay in Zagreb for all visitors, as well as for those who have just become proud owners, we provide a brief overview of pet etiquette (and their owners)!

We bring you all the rules of good behaviour in one place, as well as the laws prescribed at the city level. Please note that if you violate any of the laws related to pet behaviour (such as not cleaning up after them or walking them without a leash where it is not prescribed), you may receive a fine from the municipal warden!

Wow Meow etiquette for beginners

We believe that some rules are universal worldwide, and they apply in Zagreb as well. The main one: clean up after your pets! Nobody likes to see dog faeces on the street or in green areas because these are places for walking or enjoying without disturbance. So, please pick up the faeces and dispose of it in special bins provided in public places!

Prohibited for pets

In some parks, you will see a sign with a crossed-out dog, indicating that dogs are not allowed to enter certain green areas, just as they are not allowed in some public institutions or cafes. Before sitting in a cafe or restaurant, check if pets are allowed there—although most welcome them gladly, there may be exceptions!

Dog parks

Yes, indeed—Zagreb is full of dog parks! These are places designed for your pets to run and play freely with other dogs. Just look for these green oases with a special sign featuring a dog, and you will know you have come to the right place. In dog parks, off-leash walking is allowed, as you can learn more about below!

Off-leash walking

Regarding off-leash walking, it is specifically regulated. Therefore, you cannot let your dog walk freely without a leash in every park or on the street, as you will have a conversation with the municipal warden. However, the City of Zagreb has published a list of locations, namely dog parks, where it is possible!

Is a muzzle required for dogs?

You can assess your dog's behaviour yourself and determine whether to put a muzzle on him even during regular walks. Keep in mind that it is mandatory in public transport for dogs over 30 cm in height, as well as in certain public institutions!
