PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Yes, indeed – pets can accompany you on public transportation! However, you should be aware of some specific conditions that you must meet in order to avoid problems with drivers or other passengers. Whether you are traveling by train, tram, or cable car, we have gathered all the important information you need to know!
ZET Tram and Sljeme Cable Car
Blind individuals: they can bring a guide dog with them, but it must wear an official uniform indicating that it is a service dog.
Individuals in wheelchairs: they can have a rehabilitation dog with them, but the provision regarding the official uniform applies, as with blind individuals.
Children with developmental disabilities: accompanied by parents, they can have a therapy dog with them in an official uniform.
Dog trainers: they have the right to bring dogs undergoing training into the vehicle, with a special uniform.
Families: they can bring a puppy undergoing family socialization into the vehicle, also with special dog clothing.
Others: transportation of pets (not just dogs) is allowed, but under special conditions.
- Dogs up to 30 cm in height (at the withers), cats, and other small, domestic animals
Pets must be transported in appropriate transport crates (which are placed as carry-on luggage) and no additional ticket is charged for them.
- Dogs over 30 cm in height (at the withers):
The dog must wear a muzzle on its snout and be on a short leash. The owner must have documentation including a certificate of registration and vaccination against rabies. An additional ticket is charged for these pets.
Please note that pet owners must enter through the front doors of the tram, carry cleaning supplies for feces with them, and clean the area of the vehicle if the pet makes a mess. Only one pet per person is allowed.
Croatian Railways
Official dogs: entry into the train is allowed for dogs led by employees of the Ministry of the Interior, Croatian Armed Forces, hunters, members of the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service, and others responsible for guiding registered rescue dogs. These dogs do not have to wear a muzzle, and no additional ticket is charged for them.
Guide/helper dogs: entry is allowed for dogs accompanying blind individuals, persons with disabilities, and trainers who are schooling them. Based on a valid ID card, individuals with such a dog can enter public areas designated for passengers, such as platforms and waiting rooms. These dogs do not have to wear a muzzle, and no additional ticket is charged for them.
Smaller animals: dogs up to 30 cm at the withers, cats, and other small domestic animals must be transported in carriers such as crates, baskets, and carriers, which can be accommodated as carry-on luggage. Additionally, dogs up to 30 cm in height can be held in the owner's lap.
Larger dogs: if the dog is taller than 30 cm at the withers, it must be kept on a short leash and wear a muzzle on its snout. The owner must have a veterinary booklet, the dog must be microchipped, and regular vaccinations must be proven. A transportation ticket is required for them (50% of the ticket price in the 2nd class) at the station ticket office, and all documentation must be presented.
Additionally, it is important to note that the same rules apply to all mentioned animals – a person can only bring one pet, and as the owner, they are responsible for their behaviour and will compensate for any damage that may occur. Dogs and other animals are not allowed to stay on the seats.
If a passenger is transporting a dog in a sleeping car (compartment), they need to pay the price for all seats in the compartment to have it reserved for exclusive use.
