Pet Adoption and Pet Care
The companionship of a pet is priceless—indeed, it is incredible to see how much love those irresistible eyes can express to their owner! If you're also seeking that unconditional love or need assistance for your pet, here you will find a list of Zagreb shelters, as well as information about pet donors.
Pet Adoption
Unfortunately, the streets of Zagreb and its surroundings are home to numerous furry friends who, for some reason, have lost the roof over their heads, without a family to share their love with or to brighten up every minute of a day. That's why there are valuable Zagreb shelters that take in these sweethearts from the streets, take care of them, and seek new homes for them.
If you are considering getting a pet, give a chance to those who deserve it the most and who are eagerly waiting for it—dogs and cats in shelters. Currently, there are three shelters open in Zagreb. Explore their websites and social media pages, and let the enchanting eyes of their residents capture your hearts!
- Azil Zagreb – Shelter for Homeless Animals of the City of Zagreb – Dumovec
- Noina Arka –Croatian Association of Animal Advocates – they adopt both dogs and cats
- Centar za pse Indigo –Association for Animal Welfare and Protection
Lost Pets
We understand that the moment when a pet goes missing is one of the most stressful for the owner. In such situations, besides searching the area where they disappeared, it is necessary to contact the Dumovec Info Centre, a shelter that also functions as a center for lost and found pets.
On the other hand, if you find someone's pet and a vet check doesn't reveal a microchip, the owner will be grateful if you report the finding to that particular center, which facilitates reuniting owners with their pets!
A list of media that advertises lost and abandoned pets is available on the website of the Prijatelji životinja Association. Prijatelji životinja Association is a non-profit, non-governmental association, founded in 2001 with the aim of promoting the protection and rights of animals and vegetarianism, i.e. veganism, as an ethical, ecological and health-friendly lifestyle.
Pet Donor
For many of you, this may be news, but pets can be blood donors just like humans! In fact, diseases and accidents occur in dogs and cats just like in humans, leading to the need for blood transfusions or its components. However, unlike human blood donation, in dogs (which can donate blood to cats as well), the transfusion is immediately transferred from the donor to the recipient, especially since these situations are usually urgent. For this reason, a database of pet donors has been created at various locations, and you can find it on the database's website.
If you want your dog to be on the donor list, it is important to first check if they meet certain criteria:
- It must be between 1 and 8 years old.
- It must weigh more than 24 kilograms.
- It must be in good health (not taking medication, free from diseases, never received a blood transfusion, or suffered from blood-borne diseases).
- It must be regularly vaccinated and free from parasites.
- It must be protected against fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes.
- It must not be on medication.
- It must have a physique suitable for blood collection and a calm temperament.
Have you checked all the boxes? If so, you can sign up for the database and save another pet's life!
